Postponement of Licensing and Revalidation

Following the Shipman Inquiry’s 5th report, all parties expressed the wish for a considered response to the entire report, rather than a piecemeal implementation of changes, and the Department of Health has announced it is to review all the recommendations made by Dame Janet Smith. The review will be undertaken by a group chaired by the Chief Medical Officer for England, Sir Liam Donaldson. The review will include the role of NHS appraisal and will cover the GMC’s arrangements for examining a doctor’s fitness to practise within the revalidation process. This will mean the postponement of the intended launch of licensing and revalidation from April 2005.

The Department has stated that the review “will build on the recent reforms to the GMC that resulted from much hard work and consultation.”

What should we do now?

Although the exact proposals for Revalidation are unknown - They are unlikely to be less stringent than initially proposed.

As a minimum in the meantime

  1. Continue to be Appraised
  2. Maintain your revalidation folder in line with your Appraisals and following Good Medical Practice
  3. Wait!
