National Core Content Collection

Clinical Databases         Full Text Journals         Registration

The National Core Content Collection is available for the whole NHS and includes the following resources. If you are not accessing via the NHS net then you may need to register an Athens Password (this allows access from home). The collection consists of:

Clinical Databases

Abstracting and Indexing databases from Dialog Datastar.  They are supplying the NHS with the following seven databases: - Medline, Psychinfo, Cinahl, Embase, British Nursing Index, AMED and DH-Data.  The databases include an e-linking feature (known as Starlinks) that takes users from document titles to full text electronic journals.

Available at http://www.nelh.nhs.uk/core_databases.asp

Alternatively if you wish to log onto the databases straightaway go to  http://nhs.dialog.com.  If you don’t already have a National Electronic Library for Health (NeLH) password, you will need to self-register.  See registration instructions below.

Full Text Journals

Proquest Information and Learning are providing access to a large collection of full text electronic journals.  Over 850 full text titles are available supporting all aspects of healthcare.

Ebsco are providing access to a collection of business and management journals.  This collection provides full text coverage of 131 well-known journals for hospital administrators and managers.

Available at http://www.nelh.nhs.uk/core_journals.asp

Electronic Publishing Agreement

As part of the collection the NHS has signed a 3 year membership agreement with BioMed Central.  BioMed Central’s business model is based on charging authors to publish, and then making the content free to readers.  Under the agreement, article-processing charges are waived – for any of the 1.2 million NHS staff – for publication in any of BioMed Central’s 90 peer-reviewed journals.  Upon acceptance, the article becomes freely available online to readers worldwide.  Many NHS researchers have already published in BioMed Central journals.  Publishing in the open access journals eliminates the need to buy costly licences from publishers or paying to view the same article multiple times.
